LITTLEPORT, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom:
JDR Cable Systems, a global provider of subsea power cables, offshore umbilical systems and specialised marine cables has been awarded the contract for the supply of subsea power array cables for the first phase of London Array Offshore Wind Farm by the project consortium of DONG Energy, E.ON and Masdar.
The first phase of the development, consisting of 175 wind turbines and 2 offshore substations will be installed in water depths of up to 23 meters some 20km (12 miles) from the Kent and Essex coasts in the outer Thames Estuary. The wind farm will be connected by subsea export cables to an onshore substation at Cleve Hill, on the North Kent coast. From the substation, the electricity will be fed into the existing 400kV transmission network.
The scope awarded to JDR includes the engineering, design and manufacture of over 200km of 33kV array cables complete with proprietary hang-off and termination systems providing the essential link between individual wind turbine generators, wind turbine generator arrays and the offshore substations. The cables will be produced in 2010 and 2011.
“The London Array project team were very clear in their determination to procure array cables that would provide the highest long-term reliability available in the market. JDR’s dedication to the highest levels of quality management and continuous improvement, developed over many years of providing subsea power cables and umbilical systems for deepwater oil & gas projects, is fully aligned with the needs of offshore wind farm operators. We shall also be providing JDR’s proprietary array cable termination systems, which have been specifically designed to minimise offshore installation costs. We are very pleased that JDR was selected as the array cable supplier and we look forward to embarking on this world class project,” stated Patrick Phelan, managing director of JDR Cable Systems Ltd.
When complete the first phase of London Array will be among the world’s largest offshore wind farms, delivering up to 630MW. This is enough power for approximately 470,000 homes and will make a substantial contribution to the UK Government’s target of providing 15% of all electricity supply from renewable sources by 2015.
“JDR has made significant investments over the last three years to address the growing and vital renewable energy initiatives taking hold in the UK and other parts of the world. Our plant in Hartlepool was carefully chosen to be located in the heart of the UK offshore community to best serve their ambitious projects yet optimally service all of Northern Europe and other geographies around the world”, commented Pat Herbert, group CEO, JDR Cable Systems (Holdings) Ltd.
Richard Rigg, the London Array Project Director stated that “London Array Limited and its Shareholders are very pleased that JDR Cable Systems have been successful in acquiring this scope of work and that the project is supporting the new UK facilities developed by JDR at Hartlepool to serve the offshore wind industry.”

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: The Neutral Group, a carbon abatement consulting and Execution Company, announced today it has received a license to operate from Masdar City, the emerging global clean technology cluster in Abu Dhabi. The company, which is relocating its headquarters to Masdar City, is the first carbon abatement consultancy to be licensed by the zero-waste, carbon-neutral, renewable energy-powered city.
With offices already in London and New York, The Neutral Group selected Masdar City for its headquarters because of the city’s emerging global role as a hub of the flourishing cleantech sector, the numerous business opportunities in the fast-growing region and the city’s tax-free, free zone status.
Khaled Awad, Director of Masdar City, said, “Many corporations have woken up to the need to operate in a more sustainable way, yet they require expertise to help them achieve their ‘green’ goals. Firms such as The Neutral Group provide an important service by helping companies reduce their carbon footprint in a manner that serves the environment and helps their bottom lines. The Neutral Group’s presence in Masdar City reflects the unique mix of firms and the synergy that characterises the business environment in the city.”
The Neutral Group, whose clients have included BP, Deutsche Post, DHL, Kraft, Marks & Spencer and Unilever, provides services in carbon footprint assessment, including supply chain assessment; carbon action plans, including preconstruction carbon action plans; and carbon reduction implementation programmes.
Noting that the firm initially considered other locations, including Copenhagen and Sydney, for their headquarters, Karl Feilder, Chairman of The Neutral Group explained why they settled on Abu Dhabi, “Masdar City is more than just a smart environment in which companies can grow; it will be home to a network of like-minded organisations that will assist each other in driving the new carbon economy. We now really feel like one of Masdar’s partners, working to realise the Masdar City vision.”
The Neutral Group is launching a fund for carbon and energy cost-reducing projects. “We have identified over $250 million of financially attractive cleantech projects in the region that are currently stalled due to lack of carbon-abatement expertise and suitable financing, so we have decided to work with some UAE-based organisations to provide these services and offer a great investment vehicle in the process ‘’.
Feilder expects to identify many other projects in the region, as companies gain a better understanding of the benefits of carbon abatement programmes that generate carbon credits and lower operating costs. “This is just the start of the cleantech revolution – with companies already reaping the benefits of lower-cost, innovative and clean solutions. We are delighted with our new offices in Masdar City – now everyone knows where to come for world-class advice and experience.”
Although Masdar City is still under construction, with the first building – part of the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology campus – set to open in the second quarter of 2010 and the first commercial buildings in 2011, the city is already creating a community of cleantech companies by offering temporary facilities in Abu Dhabi city.

Dubai, UAE, November 24, 2009: Drydocks World – Dubai, the region’s premier ship repair, conversion and new building yard and the flagship company of Drydocks World, today announced that work is underway on its first ever Floating Storage Re-gasification Unit (FSRU) conversion project, known as the FSRU LIVORNO Project.

The conversion of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carrier, “Golar Frost” into an FSRU, is being handled by the Main Contractor, Saipem, a leading international turnkey contractor in the oil and gas industry and will be delivered to OLT Offshore LNG Toscana, a company operating in the Italian gas industry.

FSRUs are floating terminals where LNG is stored before being re-gasified on board. “Golar Frost” will be converted into a floating LNG receiving terminal of FSRU type to be permanently moored offshore Livorno, Italy, approximately 12 miles from the coast in a water depth of about 120 metres and connected to shore through a gas export pipeline.
It will have a storage capacity of 137,000 cubic meters of LNG and a production capacity of 3.75 billion standard cubic meters per annum (bscmpa).

FSRU conversion is one of the very few such projects undertaken by ship yards across the world. Drydocks World – Dubai began work in June 2009 and plans to complete it by mid 2010. Mr. Nawal Saigal, Managing Director, Drydocks World – Dubai, said: “The FSRU Livorno conversion is a prestigious assignment for us. It is the largest and most advanced FSRU to come into the market. Drydocks World – Dubai has collaborated with Saipem on many projects in the past and we appreciate their confidence in our maritime engineering expertise and manpower excellence. We are confident that this project will further strengthen Dubai’s reputation as a global leader in the ship conversion industry.”

The conversion of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carrier includes fabrication and installation of structures such as turret mooring system, aft thruster compartment, foundations of cranes and loading arms, bilge keel and foundations for equipments. In addition, the unit’s external hull, deck and outfitting will be blasted and coated.

The project also involves the installation of a side by side berthing mooring system for the LNG carrier, a loading system (i.e. loading arms), LNG transfer system to regasification plant, a process plant for regasification, utilities including power generation and sea water systems, control, automation and communications systems.

Bahrain poised to become major hub for developing regional capability in the energy industry, says Edutech

Bahrain’s gas production expected to climb to 15 billion cu. meters in 4 to 6 years

November 17, 2009

Bahrain is poised to become a major hub for developing regional capability in the energy industry, according to Edutech, a leading provider of educational solutions and services. With the country’s gas production expected to climb to 15 billion cu. metres by 2014 to 2016, and projection that the country will account for 0.39 per cent of Middle East regional oil demand by 2013, energy companies are taking strides in developing a more competent workforce. In line with its support for Bahrain’s vision, Edutech brings to the Kingdom ‘DSS-100 Dynamic Simulator System’ and ‘Industrial Technologies Curriculum’, two cutting-edge solutions focused on the teaching and training needs of the oil, gas and petrochemicals sector.

The ‘DSS-100 Dynamic Simulator System’ is interactive and dynamic, with real-time process Operator Training Simulator (OTS) software, wherein trainees can practice prior to working on the real process systems. The solution simulates exercises, and allows instructors to create faults or errors in the system for trainees to identify. Designed to run on a standalone PC or a network, DSS-100 incorporates a simulator’s intuitive interface, which facilitates ‘point and click’ access to virtually every feature in the simulator.

“We support Bahrain’s efforts to build a fully skilled and efficient national workforce and our awareness initiatives for technology-driven science solutions are specifically designed to provide a link to the chain of knowledge by educating the new batch of professionals,” said ASF Karim, CEO, Edutech. “In line with this, we are constantly seeking opportunities to showcase the importance of technology-powered solutions and their potential to further boost competency levels across upstream, midstream and downstream operations in the Kingdom.

Another high-impact eLearning tool for the Oil and Gas sector is ‘Industrial Technologies Curriculum’, a dynamic, comprehensive training solution designed to take the learner through the academic learning process to hands-on and on-site training. The solution covers all major disciplines including industrial maintenance, industrial electricity, management, safety, soft skills and oil and gas production, among others.

“By offering the right technology-driven solutions to improve processes, increase efficiency and bridge the competency gap, we are realising our goal of contributing to the productivity of regional oil and gas companies’ operations, including the implementation of human capital and talent management solutions. Currently, we are working with national universities, colleges and institutes from the region as well as international training and education providers to add real value to the development of national skills,” concluded Karim.
