Structured testing: The optimal key to individualized diabetes management

Today, around 285 million people worldwide have diabetes, and the numbers are increasing continuously. In UAE, the prevalence currently ranges between 20 and 25% of the adult population and is particularly higher over the age of 55. However, ensuring an optimal level of diabetes care, taking the individual needs of the patients into account, is no easy task for caregivers and healthcare systems. On the occasion of the World Diabetes Congress in Dubai, Roche Diabetes Care supported an international scientific event titled “Making sense of blood glucose monitoring. How?, on December 6, 2011, which was chaired by Dr. Ali Khalil, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City Abu Dhabi, and Prof. Nebosja Lalic, Institute for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Belgrade (Serbia), Both renowned speakers gave inspiring lectures on the vital role of structured testing – a crucial lever to help fine-tune diabetes therapy to individual lifestyles – and the importance of turning the available scientific evidence into practice – two.

Understanding individual blood glucose patterns
Diabetes is a chronic disease and has to be treated accordingly – meaning constant, life-long treatment. The prerequisites are an appropriate adaptation of lifestyle and a therapy aimed at keeping blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible. To achieve this, a detailed overview of blood glucose levels over time and the analysis of individual profiles are essential. Nonetheless, many physicians still base their therapy decisions exclusively on HbA1c levels, the average blood glucose value over the past two to three months. “However, anyone who bases therapy decisions solely on HbA1c will only see parts of the picture of a patient’s metabolic situation. Two patients with identical HbA1c levels may present with totally different glucose profiles,” said Dr. Khalil in his talk. HbA1c values fail to capture high blood glucose levels after a meal, for instance, as well as elevated or dangerously low fasting levels. And it is particularly the post-meal blood glucose peaks that are closely linked to secondary complications such as stroke, kidney failure, blindness or heart attacks. The increasing number of diabetes patients as well as the rising number of secondary complications put a severe burden on healthcare systems and societies.
“To be able to overcome the diabetes-related challenges we currently face, we need to manage the condition in a more comprehensive manner to include the patient’s requirements within the context of his (her) environment and society.

Patients need to feel empowered and confident – to be in control of their diabetes
The basis for individualized and successful diabetes management is structured self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG), including data documentation and visualization. The final results of an international, multi-center study involving 758 participants demonstrated that the combination of structured testing and the therapy decisions derived from it is successful. Every three months, the patients measured their glucose levels before and after breakfast, lunch, and dinner and again before bedtime on three consecutive days, using the Accu-Chek® 360° View 3-day profile tool. They discussed the results with their physicians, including any necessary therapy adjustments like changes in their medication, diet or exercise habits. At the end of the study after 6 months, patients performing structured testing achieved significantly greater reductions in their blood glucose levels than those who did not follow this approach.

”Our study employing the structured testing concept using Accu-Chek 360° View tool and the Accu-Chek Assist educational program was able to clearly demonstrate that the more we base our therapy decisions on the individual daily blood glucose patterns, the more effective the therapy is,” stated Prof Lalic. This is why he and his co-workers have designed and implemented a nation-wide program in Serbia integrating education and structured blood glucose monitoring.

“To implement this knowledge into daily practice, doctors need valid data and reliable methods for data analysis,” stated Prof. Lalic. Ideally suited and innovative blood glucose monitoring systems, data management solutions such as the Accu-Chek® Smart Pix device reader are readily available to doctors’ practices in many parts of the world. They save time and optimize the patient-doctor dialogue. Experts in many countries already rely on structured testing and existing diabetes management resources and have reached a consensus on integrating them into their national standards of care.

The study results show that the concept of structured SMBG is an important cornerstone in diabetes therapy for an optimal management of the disease. It clearly visualizes how lifestyle affects the metabolism. This makes people with diabetes feel more empowered and confident to derive the important daily therapy decisions on their own. “Such individualized and target-oriented diabetes management, combined with increased empowerment and motivation of the patients to follow their caregiver’s recommendations and make informed therapy adjustments by themselves, represents the most promising form of diabetes therapy today,” said Dr. Lalic. And he concluded: ”Only a systematic diabetes management approach like the one we have implemented at the SKMC incorporating structured SMBG as well as patient education will allow us to efficiently deal with the challenges diabetes poses on our healthcare system. The approach of structured testing in combination with the Accu-Chek tools is easy, effectively supports us in motivating our patients to change lifestyle habits and helps us to save time as well as to obtain the reliable results.”

Tranzone Announces New Long-Term Partnership with GSK

At today’s opening ceremony at their facility in Jebel Ali, Tranzone announced a new contract with Glaxo Smith Kline, a major player in the health care industry. Mr Aiman Hamadallah, Vice President Finance Banaja Holdings, Juergen Hirsch, General Manager Tranzone Logistics FZCO and Mr. Fouad Benghalem, SVP Middle East Africa of GSK, all made speeches before the ribbon cutting ceremony in front of the GSK area inside the warehouse.

Tranzone Logistics fzco, a subsidiary of Banaja Holdings, is the first and only specialised company in Jebel Ali Free Zone to provide storage and handling services uniquely to the health industry.

At time of writing, Tranzone will be responsible for warehousing various GSK products for distribution to the Gulf and Near East region.

High priorities in GSK’s awarding of the lucrative contract to Tranzone were the top-of-the-range facilities available and back-up strategies to protect products at all times in all circumstances, the high quality management system and absolute confidence in their professionalism and ethics, these last two vital when they have a direct impact on health and life itself.

A spokesperson for Tranzone confirmed that GSK had very exacting standards in their quality department but that they (Tranzone) had met them all comfortably. Emphasis has also been placed on physical security such as access control and fire prevention and process quality. All GSK’s criteria were met, as well as the strict standards demanded by the UAE’s Ministry of Health. The spokesperson added that such criteria and strict standards were never viewed as a problem; quite the reverse, because of them, clients could be confident in the company’s self-imposed rigorous safety and good practice measures.

It would be fair to say that GSK, occupying a major part of Tranzone’s warehouse, will be responsible for contributing approximately 25% of their revenue in 2012. It also enhances the latter’s image and reputation in the market. While not the largest logistics service provider in terms of operations, they are fiercely proud of their professionalism, quality standards and flexibility.

Tranzone would be among the first to acknowledge that apart from the obvious financial returns, the new deal with GSK is good for their image and will bring about further recognition in the health care industry. GSK is a world-leading research based pharmaceutical and healthcare company with headquarters in the UK and to have their public confidence is seen as a major acknowledgement of Tranzone’s place as a force to be reckoned with in the region.

                                                        -End-

Tranzone Logistics, a member of Banaja Holdings, operates a state-of-the-art 3PL warehouse at JAFZA in Jebel Ali. Utilizing a unique one-stop approach, Tranzone centralizes logistics. They provide storage, inventory management, as well as purchasing and re-invoicing to the distributor, all at one convenient location. Ultimately, Tranzone is able to store pharmaceuticals in the ideal environment, and their business model is unmatched. Their integrated system better links principals with distributors, removes layers of inefficiency and cuts costs while improving service quality.

Abu Dhabi, UAE: Nursing in the UAE, as everywhere else in the world, struggles to recruit and retain nursing staff. The majority of the nursing workforce is recruited from the Indian subcontinent and the Philippines with only approximately 3% of the UAE nursing workforce made up of Emirati nationals (El-Haddad M., 2006). Even though Emirati women have recently been empowered to join the national workforce, not many have joined the nursing profession. Several factors may be contributing, in varying degrees, to this predicament.

Amal Rawhi Al Abed, Charge Nurse at the Nursing Education Unit, Rashid Hospital, UAE, will discuss the Rashid Hospital Emirati Nurse Mentorship Program (RHENMP) at the 2nd Nursing Conference which will take place 23-25 October 2011 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center, UAE. The Nursing Conference is part of the 5th annual Abu Dhabi Medical Congress (ADMC) and will focus on providing nurses with a three-day educational event that will highlight the importance of nurses in each department within the healthcare facility following the theme “Valuing the Role of the Nurse in the UAE”.

According to Al Abed, Emirati nurses employment planning and training schemes are crucial for UAE hospitals and a comprehensive mentorship program is essential to improve the retention of Emirati nurses and maintain their job satisfaction. “There has previously been a lack of comprehensive career advancement training and mentorship programs for Emirati nurses in the UAE as well as a lack of knowledge about the specific education, management and clinical competencies required for the Emirati nurses development,” says Al Abed.

“Within Rashid Hospital a defined career pathway strategy for nursing has been developed and implemented for all staff,” Al Abed continues. “RHENMP is a non-time limited program which supports both their professional progress and facilitates Emirati nurses’ retention, adaptation and fulfilling of clinical practice and carrier development.”
Jane Griffiths is the Director of Nursing at Rashid Hospital and is also sitting on the Scientific Committee at the Nursing Conference in Abu Dhabi.

According to Griffiths, “As well as tackling the issue of recruitment and staff retention, the Nursing Conference at ADMC aims to ensure that nurses are recognised for all their hard work. Every single person attending will benefit from the opportunity to exchange ideas, share knowledge and leave with the confidence that they can enhance the patient care that they deliver.”

“The topics at the Nursing Conference are varied as we hope to appeal to a wide spectrum of nurses working in all types of healthcare sectors,” she continues. “Nurses work in the community, hospitals and critical care areas so we have put together a comprehensive conference programme that will cover all aspects of their work.”

For the first time, The Nursing Conference will introduce web-based learning and IT for nursing as well as a whole day’s session on the management of nursing staff. Also for the first time, a problem-solving session will be introduced to the programme in which nurses from across the UAE can interact with a panel of experts in order to further improve patient care within the UAE.

Supported by Cleveland Clinic, the Abu Dhabi Medical Congress is the only event in the Middle East that brings together healthcare professionals from the fields of Patient Safety, Emergency Services, Rehabilitation and Primary Healthcare for both scientific and commercial exchange.

Running alongside the Congress is a 7,000sqm exhibition which will attract over 150 companies, including UE Medical, Abbott, ASP by Johnson & Johnson, Leader Healthcare, MSD, Philips and Siemens, looking to showcase their latest products and services in these sectors.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Wednesday, September 14th 2011 [ME NewsWire]

As part of its social responsibility commitments Jafza organized a three day-long blood donation drive in the Free Zone, which saw participation from employees of Economic Zones World and Jafza customers .

The initiative was held in collaboration with the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department (DNRD) and the collected blood was donated to the blood bank of the Al Wasl Hospital. A mobile centre was set up in a busy area outside the Jafza Customer Service Centre in building 14 to encourage customers to participate in the Blood Donation Drive.

Part of the donated blood will be used to help patients suffering from Thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder which affects some 8.5 per cent (one out of 12 person is a carrier) of the people in the UAE.

Dr. Eng. Hamad Al Hashemi, SVP, Corporate Communications, said: “We are pleased with the campaign’s success and the response from the Jafza community. The Blood donation Drive was an excellent opportunity to engage people and bring them together for a good cause. We would like to thank our employees and our customers for their participation. One of EZW CSR objectives is to improve society welfare through direct interaction and involvement with the community. We will continue to promote health and safety awareness campaigns and all related information that will ensure the wellbeing of the community we operate in,”

Economic Zones World has undertaken various activities in recent years incorporating CSR in Corporate Governance, Workplace, Marketplace, Environment and Community.

EZW’s Workplace and Marketplace initiatives include the “We Care” programme, under which it organises Diabetes campaign, National Day and Eid celebrations etc. as well as CSR Awareness & Networking programmes involving employees, customers and partners.

The free zone operator’s Environment initiatives include Paper Recycling campaigns, Planting drives while its Community initiatives include work placement and joint activities with community development organisations.

In order to integrate these social values and commitments into the company’s overall business model, Economic Zones World has recently launched a CSR Policy manual, which outlines EZW policies and serves as a reference for all its stakeholders.

According to Peter Newson, Director, Valisafe, Bishop’s Stortford, UK, “These standards include the technical specifications of the equipment and, just as importantly, guidance on every step of the decontamination process. There are also standards written specifically for end users – with the ever increasing complexity of the instruments being used it is critical that the steps required to ensure that these are effectively reprocessed are universally understood and implemented – particularly in the Middle East where medical staff is comprised of medical professionals from all over the world.”

Every medical facility that is reprocessing re-usable instruments needs to ensure the equipment they are using, the practices and protocols they are implementing, and the validation and testing of those processes all ensure that the instruments being processed consistently meet expected outcomes – in other words are clean and effectively sterilised.

Mr Newson will be speaking at the 6th Middle East CSSD Decontamination & Sterilisation Conference which will run as part the Abu Dhabi Medical Congress (ADMC), from 23-25 October, 2011, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). Organised by Informa Exhibitions, the CSSD Decontamination & Sterilisation Conference will meet the growing challenges faced by personnel working in CSSD departments in the Middle East region by presenting the latest innovations in the extremely dynamic area of hospital hygiene disinfection.

“With regards to the quality of the CSSD’s in the Middle East, as everywhere in the world, the standard will vary,” says Wim Renders, President, World Forum for Hospital Sterile Supply (WFHSS), Belgium, who will also be speaking at the Conference. “But it is of the utmost importance that all departments produce at least a basic quality because it is a basic patient right to be treated with a medical device of good quality. In this regard national sterilisation associations are important as they are the ideal carriers of knowledge to the departments.”

According to Mr Renders, it is only the authorities, both locally and internationally, that are in the position to impose the directives, norms and guidelines related to effective sterilisation of medical equipment, and equally important, also to control their implementation. “For real progress, an intense interaction between the authorities and national associations is required in combination with the continuous efforts of the CSSD’s,” said Mr Renders.

As well as the comprehensive, CME accredited conference programme across four sectors – Primary Healthcare, Emergency, Rehabilitation as well as Patient Safety – ADMC will occupy 6,000sqm of the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and will attract over 150 companies to exhibit over the three-day event.

Abu Dhabi, UAE:Decontamination as a science is constantly developing as the focus globally on hospital acquired infections, and the litigious implications, become ever more prominent. The result has seen a significant shift in positioning of a medical facility’s CSSD (Central Sterile Service Department) and the only way for hospitals across the Middle East to achieve this is by following recommended international, national and regional regulations and standards.

“Traditionally veneers have represented one of the best cosmetic dentistry options for people wanting whiter teeth or who want to camouflage spaces between ‘gappy’ or overcrowded teeth,” says Dr Kumar. “However, having veneers on your teeth is a permanent solution and the veneers will need to be replaced after a period of time.

“Some dentists routinely remove at least 1.5 mm of the outer enamel to create space for veneers. This can lead to a number of complications such as pulpitis, tooth fracture, veneer failure due to the loss of the enamel surface, gingivitis or gingival recession. Once you trim down a tooth you reduce its life expectancy. As we only have one set of adult teeth, why should we rush into irreversible treatment?”

Instead, Dr Kumar recommends the patient does their homework before opting for veneers and considers the less-invasive options available in today’s market. Treatment such as Invisalign, for example, straighten teeth without the need for metal braces or tooth extraction using instead a series of clear, plastic ‘aligners’ which slowly move teeth over time using individual virtual 3D treatment.

“While the total treatment time with this less invasive method of achieving a ‘Hollywood smile’ can take from nine to 15 months, ultimately this treatment is more comfortable and the patient will avoid causing irreplaceable damage to their teeth,” explains Dr Kumar. “To recreate that ‘Hollywood smile’, at the end of the treatment the teeth can be safely whitened if the patient so desires.”

Dr Kumar also advises to watch out for unqualified dentists. “It is very difficult to know how good your dentist really is as anyone can print a certificate. Sometimes a good measure is to see if the dentist can spot the patients’ cosmetic problem without being shown it. This shows that the dentist has experience and is looking at details when carrying out an examination. The best thing is to be shown before and after cases that the dentist has carried out.”

Dr Raj Kumar will be speaking at the 3rd Dentistry Middle East Exhibition and Conference, the Middle East’s largest gathering of dental professionals, which will run from 1-3 November, 2011, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), with more than 30 leading experts in the field of dentistry highlighting the educational significance of the event.

Prof Dr Asmat Lone, Chairman of the Advisory Board for Dentistry Middle East 2011, says: “Cosmetic dentistry is becoming extremely popular in the Middle East as the middle and upper class want their smiles to look perfect. Missing teeth are also becoming a major problem in the Middle East as people are loosing teeth due to decay and trauma. The teeth have to be replaced and implantology is becoming the first choice.”

Crafted by Informa Exhibitions, the organisers of the annual Arab Health Exhibition and Congress, Dentistry Middle East 2011 is an opportunity for delegates to attend a selection of workshops in various dental specialities which will provide a strong clinical aspect to the conference. The event is supported by the UAE Ministry of Health and the Dubai Health Authority.

Running beside the conference is a major exhibition showcasing a wide range of products including imaging software, impression materials, hand instruments and implant systems from leading regional and global suppliers such as GSK, Elsevier and New York University College of Dentistry.

Trade visitors have unlimited access to the exhibition, and may register their participation at any time prior or during the event.

Abu Dhabi, UAE: With weekly TV programmes in the Middle East showing dentists giving people the pearly-whites of their dreams, and newspapers touting the latest procedure to give you a ‘new smile in an hour’, the attraction of a quick-fix cosmetic smile makeover such as dental veneers, rather than prolonged improvement through natural alignment, can seem a very attractive option for many busy professionals. But, as Dr Raj Kumar, founder of Forma and speaker at Dentistry Middle East 2011 explains, the worrying trend for unnecessary cosmetic dental veneers, carried out on healthy teeth for the sake of a smile makeover, can do more harm than good.

Dubai, UAE: The winners for the 2011 Hospital Build Middle East Awards were announced this morning at the Hospital Build Middle East Exhibition & Congress, which got underway today (Monday 13 June), at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. My MD by Creative Zone won the award for the Best Technology Initiative – a new category introduced this year.

The 3rd Hospital Build Middle East Exhibition & Congress was officially inaugurated this morning by His Excellency Qadhi Saeed Al Murooshid, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority, who was accompanied by senior government officials and organisers, Informa Exhibitions.

Hospital Build is the fastest-growing, global business-to-business platform where top-level decision makers from the Middle East’s healthcare construction and management industry can network with key players in hospital planning, design, construction, operations, management, supply and refurbishment.

The winners for the six award categories are as follows: Best Physical Environment – Al Seef Hospital, Kuwait; Best Sustainable Hospital Project – Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, UAE; Best Healing Environment – RAK Hospital, UAE; Best Hospital Design (Built) – International Medical Centre, KSA; Best Hospital Design (Future) – Bahrain Royal Maternity Hospital, Bahrain, and, of course, Best Technology Initiative – My MD, UAE.

As the healthcare industry thrives and grows there is a need to recognise and reward industry leaders and innovators. The judging panel, which included Ted Jacobs, president and founder of Ted Jacobs Engineering Group from the USA, Malek El Husseini, business development director, GE Healthcare Middle East, Kamil Eid, managing director, Ventures Healthcare, and Karen Reno, consultant, Joint Commission Resources Inc., examined more than 190 nominations submitted by healthcare facilities from around the Middle East region.

“Every year we see an increase in the number of submissions as well as improvement in terms of quality of the submissions,” says Mr El Husseini. “The newly introduced category for Best Technology Initiative witnessed a high number of submissions which highlights the creativity and innovation that the healthcare field will witness in the future.”

For the Best Technology Initiative category the judges looked at how nominated healthcare facilities utilised a new technology in ways that improve healthcare outcomes and reduce the diagnosis and treatment times. This new technology also needed to open the door for new ways to deal with patients to create an overall better patient experience.

Mr El Husseini commented on My MD, the winning submission for the Best Technology Initiative Award: “MY MD provides a wide range of information about healthcare services. It provides comprehensive information for its users and consequently makes their life easier. My MD also has good knowledge-based content which allows a maximum number of users to profit from the information posted.”

Dr Zuhair Maimani, General Manager, Creative Zone commented on My MD’s win, “It is a great pride and honor to have won as Best Technology Initiative at the 3rd Hospital Build Awards. Being a winner is a great success to our organisation. It has been an enchanted adventure to share this with so many and our team is continuously working to improve and enhance our product and develop more ideas. Once again, thank you for the believing in us.”

The awards trophies for the Hospital Build Awards were presented by His Excellency Qadhi Saeed Al Murooshid, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority.

The Hospital Build Middle East Exhibition & Congress will continue on 14 and 15 June 2011, from 10.00am to 6.00pm at the Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Center. Trade visitors have unlimited access to the exhibition, and may register their participation any time during the event.
