HONG KONG, China: The 5th East Asian Games (EAG) in Hong Kong came to an emotional close on December 13, with an enthusiastic crowd cheering the star-studded finale at a coliseum in this southern Chinese city.
The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Mr Donald Tsang, declared the Games closed. This was followed by the handing over of the EAG flag to Mr Wang Xingguo, Mayor of Tianjin, China. Tianjin will host the 6th EAG in 2013.
The moving chorus of the 5th EAG theme song “You Are The Legend” filled the coliseum. It was a fitting send-off for the elite athletes from nine countries and regions who set the biggest ever EAG alight since the Games’ spectacular opening on December 5. Altogether 2,300 sportsmen and women competed in 22 sports in a spirit that combined friendship with sportsmanship. EAG records were shattered and new stars were born.
Sports fans are left with vivid memories of the gold medal winning performances of several world-class athletes. Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang and diver Guo Jingjing, Korean taekwondo expert Cha Dongmin and Japanese swimmer Ryo Tateishi were among the star athletes who won the loudest applause.
On the medals table, China finished top with 232, followed by Japan 190 and Korea 143. Host Hong Kong harvested 26 golds, 31 silver and 53 bronze, a record haul since its first participation in the EAG in 1993. Other participants in the EAG are DPR Korea; Macao, China; Mongolia; Chinese Taipei and Guam.
Pop stars from the region – Korea’s Chae Yeon, Japan’s Kousuke Atari, Richie Jen from Chinese Taipei, China’s Dadawa and Hong Kong’s own Eason Chan – joined the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra to perform the EAG theme song at the closing ceremony after performers from Tianjin gave a taste of what is to come in 2013.
Hong Kong spent six years preparing for the EAG – the largest international multi-sport event ever held in the city, which only last year joined the ranks of Olympic co-host cities by staging the equestrian events of the Beijing Olympics. The annual Hong Kong Rugby Sevens and flagship marathon, squash, badminton, volleyball, tennis, golf, cricket and dragon boat racing events have all reinforced the city’s position as a major centre for sport in Asia.

Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, 7th December, 2009: Bawadi Mall’s ongoing “Celebrate with Flowers” festival has attracted 450,000 visitors from Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, other Emirates and neighborhood countries like Oman after two weeks of its commencement on the 20th of November.
The 140,000 square metre Bawadi Mall, which has been positioned as Al Ain’s ultimate shopping, dining and leisure destination, has hosted an international Egyptian Circus from the 27th of November until the 4th of December, 2009 covering Eid Adha and The UAE National Day. This programme targeted both adults and children.
The mall distributed flowers on the first and second day of Eid Adha to lady visitors. Also, elaborate flower decorations have been put up all over the mall, starting from Adha until the National Day, and continuing until the New Year’s Eve.
Khalid Shraim, Marketing Manager, Bawadi Mall, said: “A mall is not merely a shopping center but it has to offer a leisurely environment for its segment of visitors. This is exactly what we are doing at Bawadi Mall. We firmly believe that these events will have a positive impact on all economic sectors in Al Ain. This is what we felt after observing the first days of the festival”.
The festival has lined up a range of offers specifically tailored to the needs of mall visitors and their families. This festival comes at a time the mall crossed the 4.5 million visitor mark at the end of November, 2009.
Stores at the mall are offering great offers from the 20th of November until the 31st of December. The festival is timely as Al Ain has moderate weather at this time of the year.
The 10,000 sq. m. “Family Entertainment Center” features a varied mix of fun, ranging from the “Roller Coaster” to the “Fun Ski Village”, amongst many other attractions. Eight movie theatres including Grand Class Hall, a bowling alley, a distinctively rich food-court and several casual dining alternatives offering delicious varieties of cuisines makes a visit to Bawadi Mall a worthwhile and exciting experience.
Bawadi Mall has been opened at a time where Al Ain city is expanding dramatically. Bawadi Mall provides an ideal shopping experience for people of the UAE and beyond.
New brands have made their debut in Al Ain city through Bawadi Mall, such as Zara, Mango, MAX , Marks & Spencer, Kotton, New look, H&M and ACE Hardware, amongst others. The mall has attracted more than 380 retail outlets, including international names.
Bawadi Mall houses a mix of international as well as regional retail brands of fashion, food, jewellery and much more, all in a bright, spacious and inviting environment, distinguished by a wide curved vaulted skylight that soars above the main corridor and its three main spacious courts.

Fujairah 14th November 2009): Fujairah is the latest stop for an initiative by ‘Heroes of the UAE’ (www.heroesoftheuae.ae) in which over 50,000 energy-saving light bulbs have been handed out to residents during the past three months.
Starting in Marina Mall, Abu Dhabi, followed by Manar Mall in Ras Al Khaimah and now by two weekends of outreach in Fujairah (13-14 and 20-21 November), the campaign will have distributed 55,000 bulbs by the end of November.
Remarkably, if all the energy-saving light bulbs given to citizens replace existing traditional light bulbs, the potential carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions savings will be equivalent to removing 3,000 cars from the road (which if lined up back-to-back would be more than15 times the height of the Burj Dubai, the world’s tallest building).
Engineer Mohamed Saif AL Afkham, General Manager at Fujairah Municipality said; “As an Emirate, we are facing acute energy challenges and public awareness about energy conservation is a crucial component to tackling this. We are proud to welcome ‘Heroes of the UAE’ to Fujairah as it complements our growing portfolio of pioneering environmental protection initiatives, including Wadi Wuyarah (the first mountain protected area in the UAE) and our work on coral reef conservation.”
Organised by the Emirates Wildlife Society in association with the World Wide Fund for Nature (EWS-WWF) and the Fujairah Municipality, the latest awareness events, held yesterday and today at Lulu Hypermarket, have had more than 6,000 people visiting the stand to take a complimentary Heroes’ energy-saving light bulb.
Also commenting, Razan Al Mubarak, Managing Director, EWS-WWF said; “We are delighted to partner with Fujairah Municipality and bring this exciting initiative to the emirate – the response to the event this weekend has been great. Fujairah and the northern emirates are important players in the battle to reduce the UAE’s carbon footprint and tackle climate change, and we look forward to continuing this partnership.”
Volunteers at all road shows have provided visitors with useful information and energy conservation tips, encouraging them to take a personal pledge to reduce their household energy consumption. In Fujairah, EWS-WWF and Fujairah Municipality staff have been supported by 40 volunteers from Ownak Ya Watan, (the east coast representative of Takatuf, a national volunteer organization) in the drive to raise awareness about how people can conserve energy at home and help reduce their carbon footprint in the UAE.
Next week staff and volunteers move to Centerpoint in Fujairah on Friday November 20th from 2pm-10pm and Saturday 21st November from 10am-6pm to rally more community support.
As part of an ongoing commitment by EWS-WWF, the initiative will be launching a water awareness drive, a schools engagement phase as well as initiatives engaging the private sector and government institutions in coming months. The campaign was developed in partnership with the Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi and has been endorsed by the Ministry of Environment and Water and the Ministry of Energy, and sponsored by the Abu Dhabi Media Company, ADWEA, HSBC and Masdar.

Dubai Airport Freezone, the leading Freezone among 13 in the UAE in terms of import and export efficiency per square metre will be showcasing its new colours after undertaking a revamp of its brand image at the Dubai Air Show.
The Dubai Airport Freezone will also be welcoming visitors to its stand A 164 at Emirates Hall to inform them of newly constructed buildings constructed as part of the Freezone’s expansion plan.
“The Dubai Airport Freezone is home to 1,500 multinational companies. Its core mandate is to attract foreign investments and contribute to the economy of Dubai,” said Mr. Ibrahim Ahli, Director of Marketing at the Dubai Airport Freezone. “Our presence at the Air Show is very important as we have 180 companies in the aviation industry based at the Freezone – international companies such as Boeing, Airbus, Jet Aviation and many more who provide the region’s aviation sector with its technical consultancy, spare parts, and repair services. The industry will benefit in a big way by our presence at the show.”
“Out of 13 free zones in the country, the Dubai Airport Freezone is No. 1 in terms of import export efficiency according to a study conducted in 2006 by Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), which belongs to the World Bank revealed that “Dubai Airport Freezone exceeded other free zones in the Middle East and North Africa by 5.45 % in providing encouraging investment opportunities. The Dubai Airport Freezone contributed 1.28 per cent to GDP in 2006 and the following year its contribution increased 2.15 per cent according to a study by the Gulf Organisation of Industrial Consultation.”
Mr. Ahli said the Freezone has a lot to offer aviation firms participating at the Air Show this year, “The Freezone brand has undergone several changes to rebrand its position and created a number of innovative products that cater to the needs of aerospace sector, these include the new office expansions with the latest telecommunications connectivity, the business centre and hospitality ambiance in the form of a new planned hotel within the premises of the Freezone and extra new services for clients planning to establish a presence in the region.”
Since its inception in 1996, the Dubai Airport Freezone has been a regular participant in the Dubai Air Show which started in 1989. The Freezone began functioning in 1998 with many aerospace companies operating within the vicinity. The year 1999 witnessed the strong debut of Dubai Freezone at the Air Show.
Mr. Ahli said that by participating in the Air Show, “We would get the opportunity to meet with the principals of the aerospace industry targeting the Middle East markets. It is an important marketing vehicle for every firm that participates in it.
He added that being in the show gives the Freezone an opportunity to create strategic partnerships with people in the aerospace industry and “enhance our sales structure, the show being the third largest event of its kind after undergoing significant growth in the last two decades.”
The Air Show has allowed us opportunities to meet our target audience at home instead of going to them overseas.”

Dubai, November 10, 2009: GEMS Education has announced an Educational Partnership with World Challenge, the leading international company in overseas expeditions for students.

World Challenge provides educational expeditions in the developing world, which teach life skills and expands student minds outside of the classroom. Both GEMS Education and World Challenge are excited about the opportunities this partnership will present to GEMS students.

Martin Clark, Senior Director – GEMS Education Ventures said, “GEMS schools embrace a philosophy of preparing students for the world and the challenges of the future. The GEMS Education approach to learning focuses not only on academic excellence but also in enabling students to develop character and creativity so that they achieve their full potential as human beings. This education venture with World Challenge gives our students the opportunities to take part in hands-on activities that challenge them to seek solutions, make informed decisions, demonstrate tenacity, and to express themselves confidently.”

Claire Ellaway, Regional Director, World Challenge explains, “With 22 years of experience, World Challenge offers an unrivalled range of expeditions geared to the education of young people. We provide a level of safety and service second to none. We are proud of this partnership with GEMS Education and are looking forward to seeing the development and success of all future GEMS students who take part in these exciting award opportunities. ”

Adventure Quest

In order to celebrate the beginning of the partnership, over 170 GEMS students from Cambridge International School and Al Khaleej National School are participating in an Adventure Quest. The quest has students taking part in team building activities which emphasize team work, allows them to enhance leadership skills, problem solving skills, communication skills and develop self-confidence in challenging situations.

The Adventure Quest activity is a part of the GEMS Leadership Challenge Awards created especially for GEMS students. Once completed, the quest allows students to receive the GEMS Ruby award, which is the first tier in this progressive award programme. GEMS students will work their way from the GEMS Ruby Award to the GEMS Emerald Award and finally to the GEMS Diamond award, which is recognized by Universities.

The Leadership Challenge Award is linked directly to the GEMS core values of World Citizenship, Universal Values, Leadership and Forward Thinking. In order to ensure all GEMS students have access to these life changing opportunities the programme has been designed with a variety of options.
The GEMS Leadership Challenge Award consists of –

GEMS Ruby Award
A student can earn the GEMS’ Ruby Certificate by completing three ½ day ‘Adventure Quest’ sessions, based at two sites in Dubai. The activities include; ‘Giants Ladder’, ‘Leap of Trust’, climbing wall and ground based practical leadership and team tasks to encourage the development of team work, leadership and communication skills as well as caring for others and problem solving.

GEMS Emerald Award
The GEMS’ Emerald Award is achieved after completing a one or two week expedition to Asia, Africa or Europe. Students will explore new cultures and environments, learn how to communicate more effectively and bond as a team, take manageable risks, overcome fears and make their own decisions – all essential lesson for the future. Students can also gain a Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE) Level 3 (equivalent to a GCSE grade B) if a portfolio of evidence is provided.

GEMS Diamond Award
The Diamond Award can be gained by completing an expedition similar to the Emerald Award but for three or four weeks. This Award has a more in-depth community/service element which fits in well with International DofE Award and for the CAS element of the IB diploma. An ASDAN Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE) Level 2 (equivalent to 70 UCAS points) can also be gained if students provide a portfolio of evidence. Students automatically gain the ASDAN University Award.
